Danao City, a 3rd class component city in the Province of Cebu is located 33 kilometers away from Cebu City and is the second largest of the 13 territorial units of Metro Cebu.

It is bounded by the town of Carmen to the north; Compostela to the south; the Camotes Sea to the east and the towns of Tuburan, Asturias and Balamban to the west.

With a land area of approximately 18,019 hectares, it is composed of 42 barangays.

There was no exact data on how Danao got its name but elders believe that it originated from the native word “Danawan” which means pond.

The City of Danao has about 226.5 hectares or 1.25% cultivated to various agricultural crops. A lot of these lands can be recommended for controlled forestry, commercial tree plantation, grazing and tourism.

Its climatic condition is characterized by not very pronounced wet and dry seasons.

Danao City, is the first town founded in the northeastern part of Cebu and became a component city of the Province of Cebu through the passage of RA 3028 on June 7, 1961.

It is considered to be the 5th highest populated area among the 13 cities and municipalities in metro cebu, tailing behind the key cities of Cebu, Lapu-lapu, Mandaue and Talisay.

In 1980, it had a population of 56,967. It rose ten years later in 1990 (73,185.) and climbed drastically (to 109,354) in 2007. In 2015, Danao has a young household population of 136,471.

Agriculture is the underlying nature of the rural economy.

It is the major source of raw resources of which the rest of the economy depends. It accounts a huge percentage of the gross national product, or a fraction of the economy, while the rest of the population is ready for employment.

Agricultural production in the city has been able to keep pace with the increasing population at the expense of judicious use of natural resources, coupled with a growing population.

There are different fishing operations in Danao City like fishing (commercial) and aquaculture/fishpond development.

The eleven (11) kilometer shoreline of Danao remained the potential sources of aqua marine products.

Danao is conducive for livestock and poultry related investments as evidenced by the proliferation of livestock and poultry farms.

Livestock and poultry production could still be expanded and modernized through innovation, enhance productivity which will create employment and increase household income. The sub-sector has achieved its target in increasing the production of livestock and poultry. This increase was due to the dispersal program schemes initiated by the local government unit and private sectors through commercial ventures.

Danao City’s educational system is developing.

With the increasing enrollment rate every year, the City strives in strengthening the current educational system by improving its facilities to produce qualified, skillful and knowledgeable future labor force.

Danao City shall likewise endeavor to encourage innovation, product and technology development utilizing local resources as part of its educational system.

The basic health services in Danao City  through the City Health Services Office (CHSO) provides preventive and curative health care.

Danao City established 33 barangay health stations with 112 barangay health workers.

Health services includes: maternal and child care, immunization, treatment of simple medical condition, nutrition, family planning, sanitary health care, health education and others.

Danao City has 2 hospitals, a privately-owned and a government-run facility.

This 100 bed capacity public hospital is strategically located at the town proper within a 8,459 sq.m. property. It serves as accessible medical facility for the  neighboring towns.

Moreover, there about 17 licensed birthing homes or lying-in clinics in danao city.

The delivery of the social welfare services in the City is propelled by its main goal of uplifting the socio-economic and living condition of those who are poor, marginalized, disadvantaged and those in crisis situation.

The month of September is considered as the peak season of Danao city. Huge volume of visitors inflates during the biggest fiesta celebrated annualy by Danawanons, The Karansa Festival.

Local and foreign tourists make up the crowd who scheduled their trips home in time for the festival to join in the revelry. And when one decides to unwind, a choice between a nearby beach or mountain is easy.

Tourism in the City of Danao is presently in the developing stage.

Good climate, land-forms, terrain, flora, fauna, bodies of water, beaches, hills, caves and natural beauty attract the interest of local and foreign tourist.

The presence of improved infrastructure, good land transportation facilities and the advantage of potential sea links as a jump-off point to other tourist destinations contribute to the dynamism of local economy which attracts and fosters inward investments and leisure.

At present, all 42 barangays have access to electric power lines.

Growing city means increasing in solid waste generation.

To create a good quality of life and ecologically-balanced community, the leaders continue to create facilities, guidelines and ordinances to support the preparation of a more comprehensive system plan that will improve the current solid waste management system- one of which is the city’s 10 year solid waste management plan.

City risk reduction and management council (cdrrmc) have initiated the development of a Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plan and Climate Change Adaptation Plan (DRRM-CCA) to guide the integration of risk reduction agenda into on-going governance and ensuring development and economic services in the Eastern part of Cebu.
