DANAO CITY, Cebu— Demonstrating its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and continuous learning, the City Government of Danao conducts a benchmarking activity from June 17 to 19, 2026, to gather best practices for the operation and management of the soon-to-rise Merkado sa Danao.

The delegation, compose of key city officials and department heads, began its learning mission in Davao City with a courtesy call on Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Basti” Duterte. The visit provides an opportunity for dialogue and knowledge-sharing on local governance initiatives and public market modernization efforts.

Following the courtesy call, the delegation proceeds to the Agdao Farmers Market, one of Davao City’s notable public markets recognized for its modern management systems, organized operations, and innovative approaches to market administration.

The benchmarking mission then continues to the Province of Bukidnon through a land trip from Davao City to the Municipality of Maramag.

Upon arrival, the delegation paid a courtesy call on Mayor Atty. Jose Joel Doromal before conducting the onsite study visit to the Maramag Public Market, which has earned recognition for its cleanliness, operational efficiency, and effective market management practices.

The activity forms part of the City Government’s preparations for the operation of the new Public Market, which is currently under construction and has already reached 80% physical accomplishment under Phase 2 and approximately 85% structural completion.

The new market project rises from the City’s vision of building back better following the devastating fire that destroyed the old Danao City Public Market.

More than simply replacing the lost structure, the City Government aims to establish a modern, resilient, and future-ready marketplace that will serve as a catalyst for economic growth and improved public service.

Anchored on Mayor Ramon “Nito” Durano III’s Connectivity Agenda, the project seeks to create a Smart Market that strengthens connections between vendors, consumers, technology, and government services. The facility is envisioned to incorporate elements of Japanese-inspired standards in market operations, emphasizing efficiency, cleanliness, discipline, sustainability, and customer-centered service.

Among the innovative features being explored are renewable energy applications, water treatment facilities, modern waste management systems, digital technologies, and other smart solutions that will contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible public market.

The benchmarking activity reflects Danao City’s core value of Knowledge, recognizing that learning from successful models is essential in delivering effective public programs and infrastructure projects.

“By studying proven systems and best practices from other local government units, Danao City aims to avoid costly mistakes, maximize public resources, and ensure that the new market will operate efficiently and sustainably for generations to come,” Mayor Durano said.

Joining the benchmarking delegation are Secretary to the City Mayor Thessa Salingua; City Councilors Ram Duterte, Roland Perez, Jojo Roble, Mhel Batucan, and Dax Banzon; City Planning and Development Officer Ramon Gorre Jr.; City Engineer Rosette Villaflor; Human Resource Management Officer Dana Canson; City Budget Officer Evelyn Rizaldo; City Treasurer Lorna Morales; City Veterinarian Dr. Roque Noya; City Agriculturist Jonrey Sedigo; City Information Officer Michelle Mondigo; personnel from the City Market Division, and Former Mayor Mix Durano in his personal capacity.

Through strategic learning, innovation, and collaboration, Danao City continues to strengthen its position as a connected and forward-looking local government, ensuring that the new public market becomes not only a center of commerce but also a gateway of opportunities for Danawanons.
