Danao City, Cebu — September 3, 2025. Danao City takes another major step toward digital transformation as it officially launches the PalengQR PH Plus Program, a nationwide initiative spearheaded by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The launching event gathers Danao City officials, department heads, BSP Region 7 and DILG representatives, financial service providers, market vendors, and tricycle drivers who express full support for the adoption of digital payments in the city.

Through the program, cashless transactions using QR codes are now accepted in the public market and the transport sector, particularly among tricycle operators and drivers. This innovation makes daily transactions more convenient, safer, and cost-effective for both vendors and consumers.

As of today’s launch, 853 market vendors and 478 members of DACOTODA (Danao-Compostela Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association) are already onboard with PalengQR, with more vendors and drivers expected and encouraged to embrace the system in the coming weeks.

This initiative not only promotes financial inclusion and digital empowerment but also prepares market vendors for the upcoming opening of the new Merkado sa Danao, a smart, eco-friendly, and disaster-resilient public market.

During the launch, BSP Regional Director Anna Clara Oville lauds Danao City’s connectivity program, personally connecting to the city’s free Wi-Fi and experiencing its fast and convenient service. She highlights that this digital readiness makes Danao well-prepared for PalengQR and commends the city’s leadership for embracing innovation.

“We really appreciate Danao City to have leaders nga gi-prepara na kamo for this program… Danawanons, you have to thank your leaders in Danao. Kay ready namo for this. Libre na ang inyong mga WiFi and you don’t have reason not to adapt the PalengQR PH,” says Director Oville.

The PalengQR PH Plus Program is part of the city’s broader digital agenda under the leadership of Mayor Nito Durano and Vice Mayor Ivy Durano, which includes free Wi-Fi in the barangays, ICT infrastructure expansion, and other smart city initiatives.

With this launch, Danao City reaffirms its commitment to transparency, innovation, and inclusivity, making digital transformation a reality, HERE AND NOW.
